Blog Six - Analysis of choreography by chosen influence of practitioner

My personal idea of the stimulus the choreographer is trying to show -

My first initial thoughts were the dancers appeared animal like with unusual, unpredictable, movements. As they began communicating and interacting with each other it reminded me of cave men and humans first meeting with each other. Tension is then built up in the music from which sounded to me like a constant heart beat and lights flash lighting up different points of the stage. I noticed in the background setting there were numbers created by the flashing architectural lights that were counting up, maybe suggesting a fast-forwards through to current time? This made me think maybe he is trying to portraying how the human body and brain has been developed overtime and our interactions with others.

What the Choreographer is trying to show -

Researching further I found an interview with Wayne McGregor. I discovered my initial thoughts and ideas do link to what he was trying to portray in the piece. He describes how this work is about how 'thinking has changed' he said 'because for the first time scientists were able to do human autopsies, there was this whole new level of understanding about the body.' -(Guardian Music, 2011) This could link similarly to the intention of our piece as we explore the emotions in the mind.

How the choreographer used the dancers and choreographic process they used -

Wayne McGregor said 'For me what's wonderful about seeing real bodies doing things that might be unfamiliar. Is the fact that they are real bodies it’s a human being doing them, and you can’t help but kind of construct narrative with that or may sense of that in that way.' - (Guardian Music, 2011) McGregor likes the body to be misbehaving, slightly disorientated or disjointed. He uses the dancers like architectural objects. The movements to me in which the dancers interact almost looks like one movement causes a reaction in the other dancers body, and this is something I would like to incorporate in my sections for the group piece as I feel it would work well to show how one emotions overrides another linking back to our stimulus and theme of DID.

Relation ship between music and movement and how it relates to the stimulus -

I think the music for this piece includes elements of animalistic qualities and later on turns into a more real world technology sound that relates to the intention of the piece and how technology has been developed and these two elements in his composition work in harmony alongside each other to compliment the dancers movement.

  1. I really love your blog you have added so much detail in and the videos are great to watch. I really like how you have quoted the Wayne McGregor and have added in an interview video. I think to improve it would be great if you talked a bit more about how the piece is similar or different to our piece.

  2. Hi Ella this is a really great blog, I enjoyed how you incorporated not only what the choreographers intention was but also how the meaning came across to you. Maybe for next time you could talk about the similarities and differences in your own personal choreography.

    1. Hi Liv, thankyou so much for your feedback I have now added in a similarity of the partner work in McGregor's piece and how I want to use this in my own choreography to show the link back to our assessment stimulus :)
