Blog Four - process and development of personal sections

What choreographic devices have you chosen to use, and has using one choreographic device helped you to develop an idea into something else?

Section Five - 'The Split' -

‘The Split' aims to show the tension building up as the two personalities begin to clash, I plan to split the group in two and perform the same motif in unison. At the end of my section I wish to have the two groups collide, creating a clear visual for the audience of the personalities clashing as we run towards each other crossing pathways, showing the mental collision of the personalities inside the brain. I wanted to use repetition to show the build, however I was unsure what I wanted the movement to be. I researched choreographer, Wayne McGregor and used his method of creating choreography from a word. I chose the word 'fight' and began creating lines and shapes that as a result gave me nice contrasting angles, lines and curves. I also thought of the colour of the word being red to add layers which led me to incorporate sharp, sudden dynamics that worked really well to link back to the contrasting emotions of someone with DID.

I found it challenging not being able to work with the others this section was split with. I'm not sure how their pieces start or finish, therefore I may have to adapt my choreography to work with theirs once it is all put together, and will be able to work on the transitions when the group is all together.

Section Ten - 'Fight with the inner self' -

For 'Fight with the inner self' I have choreographed one duet the whole group will perform in pairs in unison aiming to show the theme of how one emotion overrides the other and this is how a clash with the personalities occurs.

I used improvisation with the use of negative space I think this will be good to show how one emotion almost acts as the controller over the other emotion. I started by creating one person’s movement then once I had this I thought about how it could be developed to look like it was controlling another emotion I could then use this movement to initiate what the second persons movement would be. I really struggled being both people in the duet and so I am not too sure how the choreography will look when there is two people performing at the same time. To resolve this again I may have to adapt some parts of my choreography.

  1. I love the videos they are really great and I can't wait to see the final result after the second person has been added to the second video. I love how you have done lots of research as well about the lines and angles you are going to use. Ii think to improve you could talk about some of the formations you have in mind for these sections and how it might represent the stimulus

    1. Hi Ell, thank you so much for your feedback! I have now included some diagrams of the formations and how it relates back to the build up to the collision of the emotions :)

  2. Hi Ella, this is a great blog post! I love how you included all of the names of the choreographic devices and techniques as it gives off a sense of sophistication. Your ideas are clear and easy to understand and I really like how you mentioned the problems you faced due to not being to be with the rest of the group when choreographing and then how you're going to resolve them. It's also great that you included a bit about how you were inspired by the practitioner Wayne McGregor. Next time perhaps you could add in a little about the link between your choreography and the stimulus, well done!

  3. Hi Ella, this is a great blog post. I love the videos you have included and the way you have made it really easy to understand and grasp. Maybe now you could think about what sort of effect you want to give to the audience. What formation would you like the dancers to be in and how would it relate back to the stimulus?

  4. Hi Ella, another detailed blog post! I love how you referenced how you were inspired by choreographer Wayne McGregor and also went into detail about the different choreographic devices used in your work while mentioning how you linked all your movement back to the stimulus. To improve you could possibly include a diagram of the formation you would like the dancers to be in? Well done :)
