Blog Two - Structure, Process, and ideas for choreography

1.) What is the current structure of your piece, and how have you come to these decisions? -

We took a vote on music and chose 'Blood Stream' by Tokyo Myers.' This was my personal recommendation, as when researching I found a person with DID usually has two or more personalities with one core personality, (Multiple Personality Disorder: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, 2016) this reminded me of ‘Blood Stream’ as it has a gentle repetitive melody that resonates throughout the track perhaps representative of the core personality, however is built up adding in instruments and speeding up the tempo. Resulting in a build of tension symbolic of the other personalities and emotions taking over. I felt this music choice would helping bring our point and intention of the piece across in the choreography in relation to the music.

2.) What was the Process and Development? -

After analysing the calmness, tension and climax, we noted time stamps when the music changes or new musical instruments are added in layered over/ taken away. From research I found that music has the capability to induce compelling emotional reactions such as chills and thrills for the listener. (Heshmat Ph.D., 2019) You can create tension using music for example using a crescendo in which the music keeps building in loudness and intensity until it reaches a climax which is something our music does to help build  tension. (How To Keep Your Audience In Suspense Using Music, 2017)

We then decided what we would show through the movement at each point in relation to following a narrative. You can also see this process in the image below.

3.) What are my ideas for the sections I have chosen to choreograph to show the intended message in relation to the music? -

My initial idea for ‘The Split’ is to have two fives and have them begin performing the same movement facing each other as everyone performs the same movement simultaneously together in unison. Linking back to the two sides of the brain working in sync before breaking out into a fight as the two sides run towards each other crossing pathways before the big climax.

For the ‘Fight with inner self’ I want to use the developmental tasks used in class such as the mirroring exercise and use of the negative space exercise in pairs to show the battle between the emotions in the brain. I think this would be a great way to show how one overriding emotion controls the other and eventually takes over. As one tries to escape and the other follows using their negative space to control where they go next.

  1. Another really great blog, I love how you have written about your personal contribution to the group and how you think the music would relate to the theme. you have included so many details and it really engaged the reader. I think to improve this vlog it would be great if you added the dynamics you where thinking about using in your given section as I really think this will help the reader understand the feeling and mood of the music at this point.

  2. Excellent work Ella. I would love to see some of the research you have done into DID that you mention in your music choice and imagery that brings it to you life. You mention how the music makes you feel is there any research you can do into why this happens? Maybe we could have some self drawn pictures for your patterns and change as you discuss through the stages of your choreography?

    1. hello Miss Davis, thank you so much for your feed back this was really helpful. I have now added in the research that links to my music choice, and added in some more research on how music can effect how we feel and how it creates an atmosphere! I've also now added in some diagrams for my sections so it is clear where we are positioned and the transition into the next section :)

  3. Hi Ella, another amazing blog post! Really detailed explanations of the processes we as a group went through and your ideas for your choreography. Really good how you talked a bit about DID too. Maybe for the first question you could add something about the movements we do at the very start of the piece and the structure we stand in, and then how it portrays our stimulus.
